This is a professional services position gathering, processing, and analyzing data relating to surveys, research projects, state publications, and special studies. The primary responsibility of the position is the daily administration of Maine's Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) which is conducted under a cooperative agreement with the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Workplace: This Statistician II position is based at the Maine Department of Labor's headquarters in Augusta, with opportunities for hybrid work arrangements. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position, with scheduling flexibility so long as core business hours are maintained (9:00am - 3:00pm).

Your Role
:
This role of the Statistician II is to research and identify occupational fatalities in Maine, as well as code injury and illness data from Workers Compensation First Reports of Injury. This work helps provide insight into causes of occupational fatalities and other injuries and illnesses, so the Department can assist employers in creating safer workplaces for their workers.

As a Statistician II, you will:
  • Write periodic and special reports that include summary tables, graphs, charts, and explanatory narratives to effectively present data findings.
  • Research and analyze trends, patterns, and relationships within data sets to produce meaningful analytical reports.
  • Apply appropriate statistical methods and techniques to analyze and interpret data.
  • Use standardized computer programs and related equipment to edit data, generate tabulations, and prepare visual representations such as graphs and charts.
  • Collect, compile, and edit raw data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper tabulation.
  • Design questionnaires and data collection forms to gather and report raw data.
  • Develop and implement reporting and data collection procedures to support ongoing data acquisition efforts.

Communication
:
Statistician II position communicates with people in person, on the phone, and in writing. The successful applicant must be able to effectively communicate statistical findings and conclusions in both written and graphic formats to individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.

Critical Thinking: Statistician II position researches trends, patterns, and relationships between data to prepare analytical reports. The successful applicant must be able to assess facts objectively, evaluate evidence, draw logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations regarding work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

Collaboration: Statistician II position works as part of a team and relies on strong relationships with internal and external partners. The successful applicant must demonstrate a proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.

Coordination
:
Statistician II position manages varying workloads and multiple deadlines while working both independently and collaboratively. The successful applicant must be able to organize and prioritize work, manage competing demands, seek assistance when needed, and ensure tasks are completed accurately and on time.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Research Methods: Statistician II position researches work-related fatalities, some of which are found through data provided by internal and external partners, and some are found by searching the internet. The preferred candidate will have experience with research methods, practices, and techniques, including data collection procedures and data validation processes.
