The Maine Municipal Association (MMA) is a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a wide range of professional services to local governments across Maine. The MMA Legal Services Department plays a crucial role in advising municipalities on a broad range of issues, ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws, and supporting effective local governance.

The Maine Municipal Association (MMA) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Legal Services to lead our Legal Services Department and provide high-level legal support to municipalities across the state. This is a key senior leadership role responsible for overseeing a team of six attorneys and a legal secretary, guiding departmental strategy, and delivering high-quality legal services that support municipal operations statewide.

• Lead and mentor a team of municipal attorneys and legal support staff.
• Provide expert guidance on complex legal issues affecting Maine municipalities.
• Review statutes, ordinances, bylaws, and case law to support member inquiries.
• Oversee legal document drafting, legislative reviews, and advisory opinions.
• Represent MMA before legislative committees and state agencies as needed.
• Develop training programs and resources for municipal officials.
• Author publications, briefs, and guides to support local government operations.
• Contribute to organizational leadership as part of MMA’s Senior Management Team.

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA‑accredited law school.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible legal experience.
• Active membership in the Maine Bar in good standing.
• Strong background in municipal or public law; litigation experience is a plus.
• Exceptional communication, research, and analytical skills.
• Demonstrated leadership ability and experience managing legal professionals.
• High ethical standards and sound professional judgment.
