- Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs must provide proof of completing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, including passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the TOEFL iBT.
- Full, current, and unrestricted state license to practice pharmacy in the United States. añad Non‑licensed pharmacists may receive temporary appointment as a Graduate Pharmacist under 38 U.S.C. §7405(c)(2)(B) with temporary appointment up to two years under supervision.
- English language proficiency (spoken and written) is required.
- For grade levels above GS‑11, a license is required.
- Verify the legality of each prescription and check the patient’s medication profile for appropriate therapeutic use and dosage, therapeutic duplication, polypharmacy, allergies, drug interactions, and other contraindications before processing and verifying orders.
- Evaluate chemotherapy orders for appropriateness based on disease state, regimen, patient‑specific factors, and laboratory results; ensure double‑check is completed before dispensing.
- Contact providers to clarify orders as needed before dispensing.
- Complete medication histories, including patient or caregiver interviews, to reconcile medications and assure an accurate medication profile for both VA and non‑VA medications.
- Monitor and assess the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.
- Provide medication counseling to patients or caregivers on medication regimens to ensure proper use, compliance, and understanding of therapy.
- Become familiar with the use and function of all automated devices or technologies used to process, fill and deliver orders.
- Oversee pharmacy technician work for all aspects of preparation and distribution.
- Manage recalls and medication shortages by substituting alternative dosage strength/instructions or suggesting therapeutic substitutions to the provider.
- Perform monthly inspections of pharmacy, ward, and clinic medication stocks for compliance with national and local regulations. (
- Maintain emergency crash cart and ensure readiness for crisis situations.
- Supervise technicians and ensure knowledge of their duties in the assigned area.
- Participate in and provide in‑service education programs for staff and health professionals; organize drug information upon request.
- Develop and maintain an internal Pharmacy Service training program to disseminate pertinent information to staff.
- May develop and implement appropriate programs for new tota pharmacy students and residents.
Work Schedule:
Part‑time – 20 hours per week. Typical hours 8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday‑Friday; tour schedule determined upon selection. Telework: not authorized; virtual: not a virtual position.
