Job Description

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve (12) month (248 days). Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board. Extended hours beyond the regular school day may be occasionally required.

Education, Training, and Experience

High School education is preferred.

Certificate and License Requirements

Possession of a valid state driver’s license. Ability to secure a Class B
Commercial Drivers License with a passenger endorsement and school bus endorsement within three (3)
months of employment. Ability to obtain ASE Certification in School Bus Diesel Engines (Test S2) and
School Bus Brakes (Test 84) within one year of being hired.

Summary Description

This position is responsible for performing skilled and routine mechanic maintenance of buses,
automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other vehicular equipment. Independent judgment concerning work
methods and procedures is required, but the work is subject to inspection during the process and upon
completion for quality and conformity with requirements.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Use and care of equipment and tools used in the automotive repair work.
  • React well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent
    interruptions, and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism.
  • Performs general automotive repair work on buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other vehicular equipment.
  • Work independently and engineer repairs on vehicles as required.
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces/repairs necessary units and related parts as needed. Repairs and
    diagnoses problems on cooling systems, fuel and exhaust systems, diesel and gasoline engines, and
    a wide variety of electrical systems.
  • Completes front-end alignments and repairs on steering and suspension systems. Performs repairs
    on chassis units, brake systems, air and hydraulic, replaces clutches, standard and automatic
    transmissions, and differential and steering units.
  • Road tests equipment to locate defects and to check repair work. As directed, operates school buses
    or other automotive equipment. Performs routine maintenance of shop equipment. May be
    required to run road and service calls for disabled buses, maintenance trucks, etc. Drive
    replacement bus to site and call for wrecker service when needed.
  • Straightens repairs and/or replaces damaged bodies, doors, fenders, grills, bumpers, frames, cross
    members, and other metal fixtures. Fills out worksheets and assigns parts to vehicles when work is
    completed.
  • Helps keep the shop and work area clean and neat. Is responsible for issued tools and security of all
    shop equipment used on mechanical work.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; demonstrate a commitment to teamwork.
  • Must be proficient in computer technology.
  • Knowledgeable of AC equipment and repairs.
  • The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not,
    as are assigned or required by such employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law
    board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.
  • Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

    Thorough knowledge of RCSS policies and procedures. Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of truck, bus and automotive equipment.
