Position Information
TxDOT's Beaumont District is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I to join us in our Newton Maintenance Section.

Salary Grade/Range: $40,918 - $61,130
This position is for one Equipment Mechanic I. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

- Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors.
- Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
- Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
- Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
- Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
- Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
- Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Reads and interprets schematics, diagrams, and blueprints.
- Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.
- Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
- Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Experience: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
