Develops, manages, and administers programs designed to protect AU research community faculty, staff, students, and patients from harm due to exposure to hazardous chemicals; to prevent chemical contamination of AU facilities and environment; and to ensure compliance with national, international, and local regulations and guidelines for use of hazardous materials. These programs include research chemical safety program; academic chemical safety program;
animal use chemical safety program; hazardous waste disposal program; and controlled substances destruction program. Serves as Institution Chemical Safety Officer, and institution Right to Know Officer.
- Serve as appointed Institution Chemical Safety Officer.
- Establish and implement strategic goals and objectives for AU Chemical Safety program.
- Consult with AU Principal Investigators regarding mitigation of chemical hazards, methods for maintaining compliance with hazardous materials regulations, and hazardous waste disposal. Provide guidance on engineered controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment.
- Develop, recommend, implement, review and revise university policies and procedures regarding Chemical Safety principles and practices.
- Develop and conduct Chemical Safety audits for research laboratories to ensure that standards are rigorously followed, and corrective measures are completed.
- Maintain a university chemical inventory database, and a library of corresponding Safety Data Sheets.
- Prepare official communications on chemical inventories to regulatory authorities.
- Certify shipments of hazardous materials from the university.
- Investigate incidents and injuries involving chemicals, identify root causes, and guide corrective actions.
