. This is a leadership opportunity for a proven professional with a strong background in lumber and building materials
, who has experience managing operations, leading sales efforts, and overseeing crews in a fast‑paced environment.
The ideal candidate has deep industry experience
, ideally someone who has worked their way up through the business and understands the day‑to‑day realities of serving builders and tradespeople
. The focus is on long‑term, B2B customer relationships
, not one‑time retail or DIY transactions.
The General Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the location to drive sales growth, operational excellence, and profitability. This role oversees sales, operations, inventory, staffing, safety, and financial performance while building and maintaining a strong, compliant, and engaged team.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperations & Financial Performance
- Lead overall location performance, including professional sales, operations, production, delivery, purchasing, and inventory control.
- Oversee daily operations and utilize reporting systems to monitor results and drive improvements.
- Develop and implement inventory control programs to meet inventory targets and improve turns.
- Maintain budget accountability and financial reporting aligned with established goals.
- Establish standard costs, operating budgets, and acceptable inventory levels.
- Monitor expenses and identify opportunities to improve profitability and efficiency.
- Drive sales growth with a strong emphasis on B2B customers
, including builders, contractors, and tradespeople. - Support and oversee professional sales efforts while maintaining strong relationships with key accounts.
- Gather and act on customer feedback to improve service levels and long‑term partnerships.
Leadership & Team Development
- Recruit, hire, train, and retain a high‑performing team across departments.
- Implement staffing strategies that reduce turnover and support sustainable growth.
- Motivate employees, maintain productivity, and develop future leaders.
- Set performance expectations, provide ongoing feedback, and approve compensation adjustments as appropriate.
Equipment, Facilities & Safety
- Recommend capital improvements based on forecasted demand, equipment efficiency, and operational needs.
- Implement cost‑effective vehicle and equipment maintenance programs.
- Promote and enforce safety initiatives to ensure compliance with OSHA and DOT requirements.
- Communicate and enforce company policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of departmental operations.
- Conduct interviews, hiring, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
- Problem Solving: Ability to identify issues, analyze data, and implement practical solutions.
- Leadership & Credibility: Builds trust, leads with confidence, and holds teams accountable.
- Communication: Communicates clearly and effectively with employees, customers, and leadership.
- Vision & Influence: Provides direction and motivates teams to achieve business goals.

- Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of four years of management experience in the lumber and building materials industry
. - Prior experience leading both operations and sales teams
. - Strong background serving professional customers (builders, contractors, trades).
- Proficient in business and financial reporting.
- Working knowledge of inventory, order processing, and accounting systems.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Solid mathematical and analytical abilities.
- Travel requirements typically range from 10–25%, depending on business needs.
- The role involves a combination of office, warehouse, and yard environments.
- Must be able to meet physical demands, including standing, walking, lifting, and operating in an industrial setting.
