Job Summary

The Standardized Patient Educator, reporting to the Director of Standardized Patients, serves as an essential team member in the recruitment and preparation of participants in the Standardized Patient (SP) in the SPEAR Center. The SP Educator works directly with SPs to prepare and evaluate their performance in portraying patients and other healthcare members in simulations for health professions learners.

Responsibilities
  • Recruitment and Training:
    Train SPs in patient and other healthcare role portrayal to facilitate medical interviewing, communication, and physical exam skills by health professions learners.
  • Ensure SP preparation, portrayal standardization, and assessment consistency to meet educational objectives, and program and event requirements.
  • Actively seek opportunities in healthcare simulation to reduce healthcare disparities.
  • Prepare and revise SP training documents and other materials.
  • Observe and evaluate SP performance and provide constructive feedback to improve role portrayal.
  • Program Development:
    Collaborate with the SPEAR team to coordinate the development and implementation of complex, detailed simulation events.
  • Use an evidence‑based approach to drive quality in human simulation events.
  • Align SP training practices with the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practices (SOBPs).
  • Maintain documents and records in support of reporting and accreditation.
  • Contribute to the program business activity, administration, and reporting.
  • Case Review:
    Lead the SP unit review of new and modified simulation cases to ensure SP scripts are high quality and effective in meeting stated learning objectives.
  • Contribute expertise to stakeholders and SPEAR team members to maximize the educational value of human simulation.
  • Collaborate with SPEAR Liaison Directors on SP script development and revision.
  • Event Coordination:
    Support SPs during simulation events which includes clarifying case scenario questions, providing real‑time feedback to SPs about their accuracy of portrayal and learner assessment, and leading post‑event SP debrief sessions, and other duties as assigned.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, scheduling, and executing all simulation activities and services in alignment with the organization strategic plan.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with institution and industry policies, standards, and regulations.
  • Provide support across the simulation team to maximize team efficiency and capacity.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
