Job SummaryLaboratory specialist that prepares, examines, and analyzes chromosomes found in biological specimens such as blood, amniotic fluid, and bone marrow. This high‑complexity testing is performed to diagnose and treat genetic diseases such as congenital birth defects, fertility problems, and hematological disorders.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions- Specimen processing: setup and maintenance of short‑ and long‑term cell cultures; notify appropriate individuals of or document any unsatisfactory specimens.
- Harvest cell cultures and prepare slides for chromosome analysis, karyotype, and fluorescence in‑situ hybridization (FISH) using GTG, NOR, C‑banding, and DAPI staining techniques.
- Perform accurate microscopic counts, karyotypes, and analysis of banded chromosomes and FISH signal counts for neoplastic and non‑neoplastic cases; correctly operate and maintain bright‑field, inverted, and fluorescent microscopes.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; document quality control and prepare regulatory documentation for CAP, CLIA, JOC, and GDCH; prepare chemicals and maintain par levels of chemicals and supplies.
- Demonstrate competency with Cerner job functions, accurately accession orders, and maintain patient records.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or another related discipline (preferred)
- MT(ASCP) – Medical Technologist
- CT(ASCP) – Cytotechnologist
- HT(ASCP) – Histotechnician
- MLT(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Technician
- MLS(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist
- CG – Certified Technologist in Cytogenetics
- HTL – Histotechnologist
- Attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and works well with others (High)
- Organized, effective communicator, adaptable (Low)
