TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work Year – 10 Months

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the school principal, special education director and supervisors, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Acts as the lead facilitator in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP) and all documentation required in its implementation. Provides an atmosphere and environment conductive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student.

Supervises students in a variety of school related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Providing both direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
  • Preparing for IEP/RTI team meetings and providing case management for assigned students with disabilities. Serving as a member of the SST/IEP team as appropriate.
  • Interpreting both formal and informal classroom based assessments for students in order to make instructional decisions. Collecting data on student performance in order to improve student outcomes and direct instruction. Administering and interpreting formal assessments as appropriate and maintaining student portfolios with current educational data.
  • Selecting and adapting materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum.
  • Participating in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in the areas of instruction, best practices, and differentiated instruction. Changing in educational policy and other information as may be necessary to improve classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.
  • Supervising and planning for the continuing professional development of paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Providing an instructional program to meet the needs of all students including students with disabilities.
  • Assisting in the review of students with learning disabilities on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central office staff as required. Providing input, when necessary, to students IEPs including use of diagnostic programs (Ed Performance, Riverdeep, Compass Learning).
  • Taking all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete records as required by law, RCSS policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assisting the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, developing reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Establishing relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
  • Planning and supervising purposeful assignments for Instructional assistants, paraprofessionals and volunteers.
  • Evaluating paraprofessional’s job performance with department heads and/or administrators.
  • Appraising own effectiveness and demonstrating successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Striving to maintain and improve professional competence.
