Job Description Position Type: Certified – Contract – Exempt
Reports To: Principal
Supervises: Students/Paraprofessionals
The role is to provide direct and indirect services and instruction to students with disabilities by working collaboratively with the general education teacher and facilitating the evaluation of the Individual Education Program (IEP) process.
Job Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a concentration in special education or related field.
Certification or Licensure: Meets Georgia state certification requirements for special education.
Skills:
- Knowledge of instructional curriculum for grade/content range and special education programs.
- Knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, IDEA, NCLB, state and federal policies.
- Behavior management, assessment, developmental reading, child development.
- Ability to work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents; adapt instruction, programs, and materials; collect instructional data.
- Excellent oral and written communication, human relations, confidentiality, professional, moral, ethical standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and integrated applications.
Work Experience: Student teaching in a specialized area or two years of teaching experience in learning disabilities, mental retardation, autism spectrum, or emotional disabilities, at level appropriate (elementary/secondary). Other combinations of education, training, experience may be considered.
Responsibilities
Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.Provide an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of all students.Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities.Collect data on student performance to improve outcomes and direct instruction.Develop, select, and modify instructional plans that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of individuals.Provide input to IEPs, including use of diagnostic programs.Assist with screening and evaluation of students with learning disabilities on a regular basis.Prepare for IEP/RTI team meetings and provide case management for assigned students.Select and adapt materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general curriculum.Serve as member of the SST/IEP team as appropriate.Complete all required paperwork according to compliance within timeframe.Meet required deadlines for annual reviews and eligibility redetermination.Maintain accurate records as required by law, district policy, and regulation.Assist students with other needs such as toileting, feeding, positioning, dressing, and other self‑help skill areas.Provide health services necessary to allow students to benefit from educational services.Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.Be available outside instructional day when required.Communicate with students, parents, staff, and the community.Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community reflecting respect for all.Assist administration in implementing policies, rules, classroom behavior, and maintaining order fairly.Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for assistants, substitutes, volunteers.Participate in department, school, district, parent meetings.Participate in professional development activities.Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sports, clubs, student organizations.Provide feedback on paraprofessional’s job performance with department heads/administrators.Maintain grading policies, attendance, e‑mail, and web pages via technology system.Foster a school climate supporting success and respect for all.Carry out additional duties as assigned by supervisor or as needed.Work Environment / Physical Demands
