R&D Controls Engineer
Location:

Overview:
The R&D Controls Engineer is responsible for developing new products, improving existing designs, and providing technical support for legacy products. This role also includes maintaining, troubleshooting, and upgrading in‑house manufacturing process equipment and machinery. The position is based on‑site in Auburn, MA.
- Lead R&D product development projects and production orders involving significant control content, from concept through installation at customer sites
- Define and communicate project cost estimates, timelines, and milestones
- Design cost‑effective control systems that integrate with mechanical systems and meet performance objectives
- Oversee creation of P&, interconnect, and control enclosure drawings
- Develop PLC logic or manage its development by external engineers
- Utilize CAD tools (including Solid Works) to create design layouts and 3D models of prototype equipment
- Schedule and lead design review meetings
- Procure materials and hardware for prototypes and coordinate with purchasing to ensure timely delivery
- Manage the New Product Release process post‑development
- Build, test, and troubleshoot prototype components and systems prior to shipment
- Travel to customer and supplier sites for installation, evaluation, and testing of prototypes
- Provide controls engineering support for in‑house manufacturing equipment and lead process control upgrade projects
- Collaborate with internal teams, international affiliates, customers, and suppliers to meet project objectives
- Promote continuous improvement and develop new methods and tools to enhance business success
- Assist sales, customers, and application engineers with design and application inquiries
- Ensure compliance with safety practices and company policies
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a controls emphasis
- Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial controls
- Familiarity with IoT and smart connected products preferred
- Strong knowledge of electrical and pneumatic controls, PLCs, AC/DC and servo drive systems, panel design, and power distribution
- Proficient in Allen‑Bradley PLC programming and device communication
- Experience with Controls CAD software and Solid Works (preferred)
- Understanding of Ethernet/IP networks and National Electrical Code compliance
- Hands‑on troubleshooting skills for electrical control systems
- Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Up to 30% travel required for installations, testing, and technical support
- Highly motivated, adaptable, and capable of thriving in a dynamic environment
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
