Polysomnographic Sleep Technologist, Registered

Description:

Polysomnographic diagnostic and therapeutic testing and analysis, and associated interventions, scoring, patient care and education under the supervision of the Sleep Lab Manager and the Medical Director, in accordance with standards established by the Association of Polysomnographic Technology. Record review and scoring of polysomnograms is an integral part of the job. Technologist may provide incidental supervision of Technicians and related staff as needed.

Position Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Licensure / Certification
    :
    Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • Special Skill / Aptitudes
    :
    Computer knowledge for data entry and access to scheduling program. Computer skills for digital Polysomnographic procedures. Excellent customer service skills to assist patients with direct care. Analytic skills to compile data and observe patients being tested and make adjustments as necessary. Ability to follow detailed directions. Ability to stand for up to 80% of the working shift and lift equipment up to 25 pounds.

    Visual abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Excellent customer service orientation to interact with hospital personnel, outside customers, and community groups.
  • Experience
    :
    Previous working experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
III. Duties / Responsibilities
  • Ensure equipment is properly prepared for patient testing and utilization.
    • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing.
    • Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance.
    • Check availability and function of emergency equipment.
  • Ensure patient is properly prepared and equipment is properly applied for accurate testing.
    • Gather and analyze patient information, including medical history, physical information, medications and procedures.
    • Communicate and answer questions regarding study protocols to patients.
    • Assist with orienting patients to the center and procedure.
    • Apply electrodes and sensors and prepare the patient for procedures within the center; prepare and apply oxygen and perform PAP mask fitting.
    • Effectively arrange for home care and educate the patient.
  • Review and properly score polysomnograms for physician assessment.
    • Score the polysomnogram and generate a report summarizing sleep/wake periods, REM episodes, arousals, EEG phenomena, cardiac events, respiratory events, limb movements and other physiological events according to current guidelines.
    • Score sleep/wake stages using professionally accepted guidelines.
    • Score clinical events (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, limb movements, arousals) according to center protocols.
    • Generate accurate reports by tabulating clinical event data.
  • Examine order and protocol for the study.
  • Recognize chief sleep/wake complaints.
  • Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapy, including continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, and oxygen administration.
  • Recognize and respond to patient medical problems and physiological events, including cardiac dysrhythmias, respiratory events and seizures.
  • Perform duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of and direction for other staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate and promote understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of the organization and maintain compliance with applicable laws and policies.
