Responsibilities
Performs comprehensive polysomnographic diagnostic and therapeutic testing and analysis, and associated interventions, scoring, and patient care and education under the supervision of the Sleep Lab Manager and the Medical Director and consistent with standards established by the Association of Polysomnographic Technology. Record review and scoring of polysomnograms are an integral part of the job. Technologist will provide incidental supervision of Technicians and related staff as needed.Ensure equipment is properly prepared for patient testing and utilization. Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing. Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance. Check availability and function of emergency equipment.Ensure patient is properly prepared and equipment is properly applied for accurate testing. Gather and analyze patient information (medical history, physical information, medications and procedures). Communicate and answer questions regarding study protocols to patients. Orient patients to centers and procedures. Apply electrodes and sensors and prepare patient for procedures within the center; prepare and apply oxygen and perform PAP mask fitting.
Arrange for home care and educate patient.Review and properly score polysomnograms for assessment by Physician. Score polysomnogram and generate reports summarizing sleep/wake periods, REM episodes, arousal analysis, EEG phenomena, cardiac events, respiratory events, limb movements and other physiological events according to current guidelines. Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events according to center-specific protocols. Generate accurate reports by tabulating clinical event data.Examine orders and protocols for studies. Recognize chief sleep/wake complaints. Implement appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration.Recognize and respond appropriately to patient's medical problems and physiological events, especially cardiac dysrhythmia, respiratory events and seizures.Perform duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of and direction for other staff. Perform other duties as assigned.Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding of the mission of Saint Joseph Mercy Oakland through behaviors consistent with Trinity Health Values. Maintains knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations and the Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Program, including standards of conduct, code of ethics, and other policies to ensure ethical and professional behavior. Supports and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with customer service expectations.Qualifications
Education – High School Diploma or GED is required.Licensure / Certification – Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.Special Skill / Aptitudes – Computer knowledge for data entry and access to scheduling program. Computer skills for digital Polysomnographic procedures. Excellent customer service skills. Analytical skills to compile data and observe patients, and make adjustments as needed. Ability to follow detailed directions. Ability to stand for up to 80% of shift and lift equipment up to 25 pounds. Visual abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Strong customer service orientation to work with hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.Experience – Previous working experience in a healthcare setting preferred.Working Conditions
- Regularly works midnights and weekends.
