Under the supervision of the Gas Superintendent, this employee performs gas service inspections for residential and commercial customers in the service area. The employee inspects residential and commercial gas service meter installations, ensures service truck is completely stocked and responds to gas service emergency calls. Prepares service inspection reports for leaks or other problems. Operates equipment associated with gas line and gas meter service installation and inspection.
This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.

Gas Line and Meter Inspection
Inspects commercial and residential gas lines and meters for proper operation; ensures lines and meters are fully safe for service.
Inspects gas lines and meters to determine that all installation or service procedures have been followed and that lines and meters are safe to operate.Ensures all gas lines and meters installed conform to established regulations or codes.Equipment OperationOperates heavy equipment associated with gas line and meter installation.
Operates equipment such as dump truck, backhoe, dozier, forklift and excavator used to install and inspect gas service lines and meters.Monitors all equipment for needed maintenance or repairs.Prepares Reports
Prepares reports concerning gas leaks or other problems.
Prepares written reports documenting gas leaks or other problems.Maintains file of all reports submitted.Non-Essential Function
Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
Possess a high school diploma or GED.Minimum of one to three (3) years of experience in gas system inspection and installation.Possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or be able to obtain this license within six (6) months of employment; must be insurable.Ability to travel to attend training workshops or professional development classes.Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.Knowledge,
Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of city rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.Knowledge of city geography, road, streets, and gas systems.Knowledge of gas line and gas meter inspection procedures.Knowledge of heavy equipment used in gas line installation and maintenance and their operation.Communication skills to effectively communicate internally, both orally and in writing.Verbal skills to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, and the general public.Writing skills to prepare reports and other materials using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Listening skills to understand customer complaints and questions.Math skills to perform basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide).Ability to troubleshoot gas line and meter problems.Ability to acquire and maintain appropriate operator qualifications to perform all job requirements.Ability to operate standard office equipment.Ability to use computers and office productivity software.Ability to maintain professional attitude.Ability to use a telephone.Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner.Ability to operate heavy equipment associated with gas line and gas meter inspection and installation.Ability to prioritize work projects and multi-task.Ability to organize files and work projects.Ability to work with little or no supervision.Ability to drive.Physical Demands
The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting moderately heavy items such as record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above‑average agility and dexterity.
Work EnvironmentThe work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, etc. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves or shields.
