Job Summary

Battelle is seeking an Energetic Materials Scientist for an on‑site position located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ
. The successful candidate will support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory’s Energetic Materials Research Laboratory (EMRL).

  • This position is contingent upon Battelle receiving a contract award. Final hiring decisions will be made after the award is confirmed.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct synthesis of small‑scale and scaled‑up homemade explosive (HME) energetic materials.
  • Perform characterization and analytical techniques to identify, isolate, or quantify chemicals/materials.
  • Support explosiveapäle effects research, including HME sensitivity analysis, scale‑up testing, thermal stability testing, and modeling and simulation work.
  • Support development of test plans, reports, presentations, laboratory safety assessment plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and other support documentation.
  • Follow and co‑author ISO‑controlled required SOPs, maintain training records, calibrate equipment, submit improvement opportunities (OFIs), and participate in quality assurance audits.
  • Maintain currency in chemical, radiation, and laser safety and explosive handling procedures mandated by TSL protocols.
  • Present and report research results using standard formats and templates in a timely manner.
  • Publish scientific results in peer‑reviewed journals, as applicable.
  • Follow safety guidelines for handling hazardous chemicals both inside and outside a fume hood, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, protective eyewear, and lab coat.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with 2 years of related experience or Master’s degree in chemistry.
  • Analytical method development for chemical analyses and quality control.
  • Experience developing SOPs and/or Laboratory Safety Action Plans (LSAPs) for analytical chemistry methods.
  • Experience employing analytical chemistry methods for quantitative instrumental analyses.
  • Strong laboratory practices with attention to detail and the ability to perform independent syntheses and research with minimal supervision.
  • Experience maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment under ISO control.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; team oriented, detail oriented, and customer focused.
  • Experience with MS Office applications.
  • Sole U.S. citizenship with eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain DOD Secret Security Clearance and DHS suitability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with 6 years of related experience or Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge and ability to produce homemade explosives (HME).
  • Experience with elemental composition, explosive potential, and/or detection probability of liquid and solid energetic materials.
  • Experience with development and application of test instrumentation techniques.
  • Experience with small‑scale and scaled‑up HME preparation, safety 亚洲, and evaluation.
  • Experience following, updating, and developing SOPs under ISO 9001 and ISO 17025.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation of explosive effects.
  • Active DHS suitability.
  • Active Secret clearance.
