Overview
Responsible for providing appropriate non-emergency and non-enforcement assistance to police officers in protecting and securing Morehouse College’s property and its students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Required Qualifications- High school education or equivalent
- Minimum experience of three years in security police work
- Minimum of 21 years old and possess a valid driver’s license
- Previous experience in the security field and strong work ethics
- Good oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the diverse campus community
- IT literate with basic proficiency in operating standard office equipment
- Campus policies and procedures: understanding of Morehouse College rules, student code of conduct, and emergency response protocols.
- State and Federal laws: familiarity with Georgia state laws, especially related to trespassing, search and seizure, arrest procedures, and use of force.
- Security and Surveillance Systems: knowledge of operating CCTV, alarm systems, and access control technologies.
- Clery Act Compliance: basic understanding of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, as well as incident reporting standards.
- Crisis and Emergency Management: awareness of incident command systems and how to respond to medical emergencies, natural disasters, and active threat situations.
- Observation and Reporting:
Ability to accurately observe incidents and write clear, concise reports. - Conflict De-escalation:
Skilled in managing disputes or tense interactions without using force. - Communication:
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with students, staff, and law enforcement. - Computer and Software Use:
Competence in using systems like , report-writing software, access control tools, and incident databases. - Customer Service: A professional, approachable demeanor; many encounters involve helping students, guests, and staff.
- Decision-Making Under Pressure:
Ability to make sound judgments during emergencies or rapidly changing situations. - Physical Fitness and Endurance:
Capability to stand or walk for extended periods, respond to emergencies quickly, and possibly restrain individuals if needed. - Attention to Detail:
Ability to notice suspicious activity or noncompliance and take appropriate action. - Teamwork and Independence:
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other officers, administrators, and external partners. - Professionalism and Integrity:
Upholding ethical standards, confidentiality, and being a reliable representative of Campus Safety.
- Physical ability to stand and walk over a prolonged period
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, grasping, lifting and carrying, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, use of foot controls, driving, talking, hearing, and seeing
- Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Medical examination required upon offer of employment
- Keen eye for suspicious behavior, hazards, or violations.
- Ability to assess surroundings and anticipate risks.
- Clear verbal communication with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Strong written communication for incident and daily activity reports.
- Ability to calm tense situations without escalating them.
- Use of tact, empathy, and authority to resolve disputes.
- Sound judgment in high-pressure or emergency situations.
- Ability to prioritize safety while following college policy and the law.
- Friendly, respectful, and helpful demeanor.
- Understanding that officers often serve as the face of the institution during interactions.
- Ability to work well with fellow officers, emergency responders, and campus staff.
- Willingness to support team goals and share information.
- Capability to patrol campus by foot or vehicle.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergencies, including running or lifting.
- Use of radios, body cameras, security systems (CCTV), and electronic access control.
- Familiarity with basic computer tasks: emails, report writing, and log systems.
- Strong ethical judgment and discretion.
- Dependable, punctual, and respectful in all interactions.
- Trained and ready to respond to fires, medical emergencies, threats, or lockdown situations.
- Basic first aid/ CPR / AED skills are often required or preferred.
