Senior Mycologist

Rhizocore Technologies is an applied mycology company using fungi to accelerate forest growth. We develop cutting-edge solutions using mycorrhizal fungi to help forests thrive, reduce reliance on artificial fertilizers, and boost soil carbon sequestration.

Based at the Roslin Innovation Centre in Edinburgh, we’re expanding into the US and seeking a Senior Mycologist to lead the development of our US fungal strain library and advance our culturing techniques.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the operational and scientific foundation of our US mycology program. We are seeking an experienced mycologist with a background in taxonomy and identification, DNA barcoding, and culture work, as well as experience in the operational management of both laboratory and field teams.

You will:

• Build and manage a US fungal strain library aligned with taxonomic and geographic priorities.
• Plan and conduct fungal collection trips across diverse ecosystems in the US and internationally.
• Apply and develop novel culturing methodologies to maximize species diversity.
• Perform molecular identification techniques (DNA extraction, PCR amplification, DNA barcoding).
• Oversee laboratory and field operations, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
• Collaborate with the wider mycology team on research and data management.

Fieldwork will involve travel across the US and occasional international trips.

Essential:

• Degree (BSc/MSc/PhD) in Mycology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
• Hands-on experience in fungal collection, identification, and culturing.
• Strong knowledge of fungal biology and genetics, including molecular techniques.
• Leadership and team management experience.
• Excellent organizational skills for planning and executing field expeditions.
• Valid US driving license and willingness to travel.

Desirable:

• Knowledge of cryopreservation, lyophilisation, and media optimization.
• Experience designing novel culturing methods.
• Project and budget management skills.
• Familiarity with fungal databases and data analysis.
