Overview
Atkins is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to join our Cultural Resources team in Atlanta, GA
. The selected candidate will apply knowledge and experience in assessing transportation planning and infrastructure projects and preparing/reviewing environmental documents in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other environmental plans. They will occasionally lead field work, adhere to Atkins safety protocols and procedures, and minimally oversee the team’s adherence to those protocols.
- Conduct research using primary and secondary sources.
- Evaluate historic resources for eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with Section 106 and other environmental laws.
- Assess effects on archaeological resources, coordinating with design professionals and the broader project team to avoid or minimize impacts, and proposing mitigation when necessary.
- Write technical reports and review reports prepared by others, including creating project and resource location maps.
- Coordinate with local, state, federal agencies, and tribal governments.
- Maintain task schedules, prioritizing required cultural resources documentation against project baseline schedules.
- Mentor junior staff.
- Occasionally spend time in the field and travel to project sites, with some overnight visits required. Primarily in Georgia, but may include locations elsewhere in the United States.
- At minimum meet the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
- 8+ years of full‑time professional Cultural Resource Management experience, with demonstrated experience in all phases of archaeological projects.
- Intermediate experience with ArcGIS.
- Prior Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) experience is highly desired.
- Prior field supervisory and report‑writing experience.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex projects while meeting baseline schedule dates.
- General understanding of transportation infrastructure, state and local governments, and regulatory/compliance environments.
- Familiarity with reading transportation engineering plans is ideal.
- Excellent written technical and interpersonal skills. A writing sample will be required.

Expected compensation range: $80,000 – $100,000 annually
, depending on skills, experience, and geographic location.
