Emory Healthcare is where belonging meets purpose. The Emory Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Movement Disorders Post Graduate Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for the next cohort. This one‑year training program trains, mentors, and promotes expert clinical specialists with a passion for developing a career treating and caring for persons with Parkinson’s.
Program HighlightsNurse Practitioner Fellows train alongside Physician Fellows. This interprofessional approach prepares graduates to participate in and facilitate collaborative interdisciplinary care. The program consists of a minimum of 300 didactic or classroom hours and 1,500 mentored clinical hours. Fellows can generally expect to spend five days a week for eight to ten hours a day on site. Usually four days will be clinical with one day of administrative work to understand this aspect of Parkinson’s care.
Most activities occur in inpatient and ambulatory settings.

The NP Fellow, throughout the training, must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients with movement disorders. The Fellow must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to develop each patient's care requirements.
Key Competencies upon Completion- Describe the pathophysiology of selected movement disorders
- Apply evidence‑based medicine in diagnosis and ongoing provision of quality, cost‑effective care for persons with selected movement disorders
- Perform physical examinations and specialized diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures
- Diagnose medical problems, develop care plans, and prescribe treatment
- Order and schedule laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures as needed
- Collect and interpret diagnostic data to implement appropriate patient care plans
- Prescribe drugs to treat specific illnesses and review medications and treatment modalities for clinical need, simplification and possible adverse reactions to adjust as indicated and applicable
- Administer injections for specific conditions, including sialorrhea, and other associated care
- Detect and evaluate for any significant change in patient’s condition, treating as indicated with current evidence‑based practice
- Arrange for consultations with or referrals to other medical professionals or community services as needed
- Select, administer, and interpret established rating scales to assess and monitor the clinical status of persons with selected movement disorders
- Design and present an educational offering for persons, families, communities, or professionals focused on a specific aspect of a selected movement disorder that is cognizant of social, emotional, physical and cultural needs of participants
- Demonstrate organizational skills in the management of a panel of persons with selected movement disorder
- Display effective communication and presentation skills as a member of the interprofessional team
- Define how and when the administration of botulinum toxin injections are needed, explain side effects, when to refer, and how to manage problems for persons with selected movement disorders
