Position: Assoc. Deputy General Counsel Sr Dir. (Special Assets)

Overview

Provides legal counsel and regulatory guidance on complex legal issues to include credit related and litigation matters in cooperation with other Synovus business units. Assists in protecting Synovus' legal interests and maintaining operations within the scope established by law. Coordinates with other areas of the General Counsel's Office as appropriate.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages a major legal specialization such as special assets credits, litigation, vendor contracts, general corporate matters and public company issues. Provides hands-on counsel to all levels of executive staff.
  • Directs the activities of assistant general counsel staff. Ensures successful and timely completion of projects and adherence to Synovus' standards and procedures. Serves on various internal committees to identify, evaluate and monitor legal and associated risks.
  • Provides tactical and strategic support, advice and counsel on complex legal and business issues and proposes creative solutions to assist Synovus in operating more effectively, profitably and with less risk.
  • Manages a major legal specialization such as credit, litigation, corporate governance, general corporate matters and public company issues. Provides hands-on counsel to all levels of executive staff.
  • Identifies and analyzes legal issues, drafts key documents, presents clear recommendations, and ensures compliance with laws and regulations. Manages internal and external legal resources to provide cost effective service to Synovus. Assists with management of outside legal counsel.
  • Interacts with business partners and members of the General Counsel's office to establish mutual expectations. Educates team members regarding legal and business issues and best practices.
  • Provides leadership, direction and growth opportunities to members of the department, performing those responsibilities in accordance with the Company's policies and applicable laws. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, disciplining team members and resolving problems. Works with the Human Resources Department to resolve more complex team member-related issues.
  • Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Law degree and admission to the Georgia bar.

Minimum Experience:

Ten years of experience as an attorney in banking or financial services with an emphasis on credit, litigation, general corporate and public company matters and two years in a leadership role.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • In depth knowledge of credit, litigation, banking regulations, general corporate and public company matters.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable operational functions, systems, policies and procedures.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to continually support people through individual development plans.
  • Ability to confidently facilitate team discussions and communicate business messages.
  • Strong listening skills and a positive communicator.
