Regulatory Compliance Specialist
A respected and growing commercial general contractor in the Southeast is seeking an experienced General Counsel to lead all legal functions for the organization. This individual will serve as the primary legal advisor to executive leadership while providing strategic and practical guidance across construction contracts, claims, compliance, and risk management.
This role is best suited for an attorney who understands the construction industry, can operate in a fast-paced environment, and is comfortable balancing legal protection with business objectives.
Position OverviewThe General Counsel will oversee all construction-related legal matters and support company leadership in managing contractual risk, dispute resolution, regulatory compliance, and operational decision-making. The ideal candidate brings both litigation awareness and contract negotiation experience within commercial construction or related industries.
Key Responsibilities Executive Legal Advisory- Serve as the primary legal advisor to executive leadership
- Provide strategic counsel on construction operations, contracts, and risk exposure
- Support business initiatives with practical, solution-oriented legal guidance
- Draft, review, and negotiate owner agreements, subcontracts, supplier contracts, and consultant agreements
- Advise project teams on contract interpretation, scope disputes, change orders, delays, and claims
- Guide internal stakeholders on risk allocation and contract compliance
- Oversee construction claims and dispute resolution processes
- Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation, arbitration, or mediation matters
- Assist project teams with documentation and claim mitigation strategies
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Advise on licensing, bonding, insurance requirements, and regulatory matters
- Partner with operations and finance teams on risk management and insurance claims
- Provide training on contract best practices and risk awareness
- Act as a business partner to project managers and executive leadership
- Manage multiple legal matters independently in a deadline-driven environment
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, preferably in construction, real estate, or commercial law
- Construction litigation experience strongly preferred
- In-house experience or direct support of general contractors, construction managers, or design-build firms preferred
- Working knowledge of standard construction contract forms and dispute resolution processes
- Strong ability to identify risk and provide business-focused recommendations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
