The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS or Department) oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol, Capitol Police, and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVE). We currently have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an Attorney
, to support the Administrative License Suspension (ALS) program . This position reports to the agency’s Senior Legal Manager

This position is perfect for candidates who seek a challenging and rewarding opportunity without sacrificing work-life balance. This position offers an opportunity to work on a wide variety of issues that impact public safety. The position requires statewide travel and is not a remote position.

Key responsibilities
:

  • Prepares cases for Administrative License Suspension (ALS) Hearings in which the Department is seeking to suspend the license of a driver arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI).
  • Represents the Department in ALS Hearings statewide before the Office of State Administrative Hearings (OSAH) including in-person hearings, video hearings, and phone hearings.
  • ALS Hearings are held statewide so travel is required for the in-person hearings.
  • Prepares and files motions in the Administrative Court on behalf of troopers and officers of the department.
  • Responds to emails regarding ALS cases and DUI issues.
  • Prepares PowerPoint presentations on DUI case law and ALS proceedings.
  • Teaches classes at trooper school on DUI case law, ALS issues, and assists with mock trial.
  • Serves as a speaker on DUI and ALS issues at seminars.
  • Serves as a legal resource for the department on DUI and ALS matters.
  • Researches and analyzes statutory and case law affecting the Department.
  • Identifies and resolves, or assists in the resolution of, legal problems.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends and changes in laws and court decisions related to the mission of the Department.
  • Assists with a monthly legal update of cases impacting the Department’s mission and prepares a monthly ALS Reminder for the Department’s legal update.
  • Serves as legal resource for questions of internal and external customers concerning issues of public safety and the operations of the Department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License).

Preferred Qualifications
:

  • Member in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia
  • Government experience – preference to those with government legal experience
  • Familiarity with state government structure and operations
  • One year of experience in one or more areas: criminal prosecutions including prosecuting DUI cases, administrative hearings, representation of government agency

Selected applicant must pass a pre-employment background investigation. This includes a review of criminal, drivers, and credit history. No polygraph examination is required for this position.
