Overview

The Privacy Legal Counsel will advise and provide guidance to Sage colleagues on privacy and data protection issues in North America (USA and Canadian businesses). The role focuses on support for colleagues in product development and engineering, sales and marketing, and assistance to the Commercial and Product Legal teams with advice on complex privacy matters (including regionally based UK/Europe legal team members) and privacy risk incident management.

The role also supports international cross-border legal and global privacy initiatives as required. The role reports to the Data Privacy Director and involves close collaboration with other members of the Data Privacy Legal team and the wider legal team.

Location:

Hybrid – 3 days per week from our Atlanta office (Ponce City Market).

In this role, you will have the opportunity to support Sage colleagues across functions including product development, engineering, sales, and marketing; collaborate with the Commercial and Product Legal teams to offer expert advice on complex privacy matters; and contribute to privacy risk incident management. You will also help develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and processes to ensure Sage?s compliance with data protection legal requirements, contributing to the organisation s commitment to data privacy and compliance while developing your expertise in this area.

You will have the opportunity to make a significant impact by providing crucial support to Sage colleagues across various functions, including product development, engineering, sales, and marketing. You will collaborate closely with the Commercial and Product Legal teams to offer expert advice on complex privacy matters and assist in privacy risk incident management. You will contribute to maintaining Sage s data privacy compliance framework, including policy review and development, and support the creation of external-facing materials such as privacy notices and consent notices.

You will build and maintain a network of business and functional colleagues to ensure collaborative, effective execution of privacy advice, identify and mitigate privacy risks, and support product and engineering teams in implementing privacy by design principles. You will lead advisory efforts on cookies, similar technologies, and digital advertising for Sage businesses in North America, contribute to the management of the data privacy operating model, act as a key contact for local legal and data privacy matters, and develop and deliver training materials to colleagues across Sage.

Responsibilities
  • Leverage knowledge of North American data protection laws (CCPA, CPRA, PIPEDA, etc.) to provide high-quality, commercially focused and timely legal advice to stakeholders across Sage.
  • Collaborate with regional legal privacy colleagues on cross-border initiatives to ensure a consistent global legal delivery approach and effective execution at scale.
  • Contribute to maintaining Sage's data privacy compliance framework, including policy review/development and external-facing materials such as privacy and consent notices.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of business and functional colleagues to enable collaborative, outcome-focused privacy advice.
  • Identify and mitigate privacy risks, provide input on data protection compliance activities, and support product and engineering teams in implementing privacy by design principles.
  • Lead advisory efforts on cookies and digital advertising for North American operations, contribute to data privacy operating model management, act as a key contact for local matters, and develop and deliver training materials.
Qualifications
  • Minimum qualifications:

    robust knowledge of North American data protection laws with at least 3 years  post-admission experience advising corporate organisations, preferably in-house.
  • Business-oriented mindset, operational focus, and familiarity with emerging technologies (ad tech, AI, machine learning). Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, prioritise tasks, and communicate complex concepts clearly to non-legal colleagues.
  • Advanced behavioural competencies including effective communication, collaboration, customer focus, and adaptability; experience with privacy management tools like One Trust.
  • Preferred qualifications:

    prior in-house experience or secondments and a track record of working on complex projects.
  • Technical/professional qualifications: USA law admitted attorney with at least 3 years post-admission experience, strong data protection law expertise, and working knowledge of data privacy regimes in other jurisdictions; IAPP CIPP certification or similar.
