Tri Net is a leading provider of comprehensive human resources solutions for small to midsize businesses (SMBs) and is seeking a strategic and collaborative Counsel, Data, Security, and Technology to lead data governance initiatives globally.
Brief OverviewThis role will be responsible for leading data governance initiatives for Tri Net’s operations globally. Reporting directly to the Director & Senior Counsel, Data Security & Technology, the candidate will work cross‑functionally with data and technology professionals to ensure data is managed, maintained, and utilized as a strategic asset.
What You Will Do- Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance strategy.
- Establish and lead the Data Governance Councils and collaborate with stakeholders to set policies and standards.
- Provide leadership to the data governance team and serve as the conduit between Legal & Compliance and the enterprise.
- Policy Development & Compliance
- Assess risk of emerging laws and regulations, particularly around AI, ML, privacy, and cybersecurity.
- Define and enforce existing data governance policies, develop new policy documents, and ensure compliance with frameworks and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee creation and maintenance of data dictionaries, catalogs, and metadata management.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Work with business teams on privacy and security control implementations.
- Promote data governance awareness and best practices across the organization.
- Communicate goals, progress, and outcomes to senior management.
- Risk Management
- Balance growth and scaling needs with legal risk.
- Advise business teams on the impact of data processing changes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all policies and standards.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Science, Business Administration, Library & Information Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school (preferred).
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience (required).
- J.D. from an accredited law school (required).
- In‑house legal or compliance experience related to data governance or technology law is a plus.
- Proven leadership experience in managing data governance and quality programs.
- Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, data quality management, and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience with data governance and quality tools and technologies.
- Familiarity with data protection laws and regulations.
- Proven track record providing advice and counsel to executives.
- Experience advising on privacy law landscape.
- Familiarity with AI and ML.
- Knowledge of privacy and cybersecurity regulatory frameworks (e.g., CCPA, GDPR, HIPAA, NIST CSF).
- IT risk management and information security principles.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and facilitation skills.
- Commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing business environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Certification in data governance or data quality (e.g., CDMP, DGSP) preferred.
- IAPP certifications such as CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, or AIGP are a plus.
- Other certifications in cybersecurity, risk management, or fraud prevention are a plus.

The preferred location is Atlanta, GA, with a salary range of $125,200–$275,000. All qualified external applicants may be considered for an in‑office role in Atlanta; internal candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered for remote hire pensation may include bonuses and benefits such as medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, a 401(k) plan, an employee stock purchase plan, company holidays, PTO, and a comprehensive leave program.
