Specimen Processor (Overnight)
Work Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM, Monday–Friday and rotating Saturday 8:00 PM – 4:30 AM
Target Pay: $18.41 per hour. Pay decisions are based on job‑related factors such as skills, experience, education, training and budget.
Job Purpose / OverviewSpecimen Processors are responsible for receiving, preparing, and processing most samples that come into the department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Receives and prepares samples for laboratory analyses.
- Accurately processes standard requisitions per approved procedures at expected rates.
- Removes specimens from transport bags, enters patient data, labels samples and aliquots as needed for multiple testing.
- Keeps inventory of samples after testing has been completed by scanning into storage racks.
- Searches lab for any samples not scanned into storage racks.
- Sorts samples for distribution throughout the lab.
- Scans tubes into storage racks and enters specimen data into database to verify the accuracy of information.
- Accession various sample types for processing.
- Checks all trash containers within the Specimen Processing department when assigned.
- Assists other lab personnel with specimen storage.
- Ensures Turn Around Times (TATs) are met.
- Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains a clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.
- Consults with senior peers on non‑complex specimen processing tasks to learn through experience.
- All other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required, with science‑related classes.
- 0–1 years related work experience preferred.
- Attention to detail and organized with the ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
- Reasoning and analytical skills to resolve issues.
- Communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in English which allows participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions.
- Positive, can‑do attitude.
- Data entry skills.
- Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.
- Stationary position—must be able to remain stationary for up to 2 hours.
- Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently.
- Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop or crouch.
- Required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Extended hours may be needed.
- Laboratory environments with potential biohazards mitigated by mandatory use of PPE.
- Works under close to moderate supervision.
- Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards.
