Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs Administration – School of Medicine

Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs Administration provides leadership, management, and oversight for business, legal, and regulatory matters involving the School of Medicine faculty. The role is responsible for the comprehensive management of faculty disciplinary and personnel issues and directs the development, review, and approval of agreements between the School of Medicine and external agencies and individuals.

As a senior leader within the School of Medicine, the Associate Dean oversees key administrative processes for faculty, including review of appointments, investigations of academic and conduct concerns, and the orchestration of faculty grievances and investigations related to scientific misconduct.

Responsibilities
  • Provides advice and subject‑matter expertise to support the management of individual faculty performance and conduct matters, including non‑renewals and terminations.
  • Leads formal investigations of faculty misconduct allegations while coordinating with Emory partners such as SOM Departmental Chairs, Administrators, HR leaders, the Office of General Counsel, Emory Healthcare/Physician Division, HR Division, and the Faculty‑Staff Assistance Program.
  • Provides support to SOM leadership and the University Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Department on research misconduct and compliance matters.
  • Supports the administration of processes and key decision‑making for grievances and disputes (e.g., faculty grievances, authorship disputes, inter‑faculty conflicts).
  • Serves as a trusted advisor and subject‑matter expert on faculty‑related policies such as vacation leave, salary continuation, and sabbatical.
  • Guides navigation of these issues with healthcare delivery partners in alignment with partnership agreements and university requirements.
  • Provides input on distinguished appointments.
  • Performs faculty affairs review and approval of new faculty candidate packets, advising Dean’s office leadership on organizational policies and procedures governing proposed faculty assignments within SOM, Emory Healthcare, and affiliated partnerships such as Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Grady Health System, and reviews faculty retention requests as needed.
  • Ensures appropriate oversight of routine review of faculty external activities and application of industry‑relationship policies to manage disclosures and conflicts of interest.
  • Holds designation as “Institutional Business Official” for all SOM NIH Loan Repayment Program applicants, providing institutional certification of salary and support.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in a scientific, health‑related, or business administration program and 10 years of experience in faculty administration, legal, and regulatory management, including supervisory experience.
  • Strong writing, conflict resolution, and critical‑thinking skills.
  • A Juris Doctor degree is strongly preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience may be considered.
