Overview
The Lead MRI Technician is a senior MRI technologist responsible for delivering high-quality imaging while providing day-to-day leadership and operational support for MRI services. This role balances direct patient care with scheduling coordination, staff training, workflow oversight, and first line technical and operational troubleshooting. The Lead MRI Technician ensures consistent image quality, efficient scanner utilization, and adherence to safety and clinic standards.
DutiesClinical Responsibilities
- Perform MRI examinations in accordance with established protocols and standards.
- Ensure accurate patient screening, positioning, coil selection, and scan execution.
- Review studies for image quality and completeness prior to submission to PACS.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex exams, patient tolerance challenges, or protocol questions.
- Model best practices in patient communication, safety, and professionalism.
- Support MRI scheduling coordination to optimize scanner utilization and patient flow.
- Assist with daily workflow management to reduce delays and improve throughput.
- Coordinate with front desk, clinical teams, and operations to resolve real time issues.
- Communicate anticipated delays or capacity constraints to appropriate stakeholders.
- Provide daily guidance and technical support to MRI technologists.
- Conduct interviews and lead onboarding and training for new MRI technologists.
- Provide ongoing coaching focused on image quality, efficiency, and consistency.
- Support competency assessments and skills validation.
- Reinforce adherence to protocols and clinic standards across the team.
- Perform and oversee daily equipment checks and quality assurance activities.
- Troubleshoot routine equipment, workflow, and image quality issues.
- Coordinate directly with preventative maintenance vendors and warranty service vendors to resolve equipment issues.
- Support troubleshooting related to protocols, applications, environmental factors, hardware, and system performance.
- Schedule and support preventative maintenance activities to minimize downtime.
- Coordinate vendor service calls and support issue resolution through completion.
- Support PACS and EHR workflows related to MRI documentation and image routing.
- Assist with downtime procedures and recovery.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, HIPAA, infection control, and clinic policies.
- Support audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
- Promote accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology or MRI program
- ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT certification required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of MRI experience required.
- Orthopaedic or musculoskeletal imaging experience in an outpatient setting.
- Prior lead, senior, or preceptor experience preferred.
- Monitor repeat scans, image quality trends, and workflow issues.
- Frequent standing, bending, and assisting patients in positioning.
- Exposure to magnetic fields, contrast agents, and typical clinical equipment.
- Standard daytime hours with potential for extended or flexible hours depending on patient volume.
