The Orthotic Fitter collaborates with therapists and patients to fit prefabricated orthotic or related devices, based on prescribed care and patient needs. Will monitor the patients over time and make any necessary changes to the devices as needed.

Job Responsibilities
  • The Orthotic Fitter collaborates with therapists and patients in cast holding and splint fabrication and modification for upper extremities (UE) and lower extremities (LE).
  • Prepares appropriate materials for casting and splinting sessions, in a timely manner. Achieves and maintains appropriate UE/LE holding position for short arm casts, long arm casts, short leg and long leg casts with minimal feedback from therapist.
  • Fabricates short arm, long arm, short leg, and long leg bivalve splint appropriately in a timely manner.
  • Fabricates and modifies splints appropriately including focused rigidity cast (FRC) and soft cast with therapist.
  • Applies all other UE braces/splints correctly following stretching (eg. Anti‑spasticity, resting hand, pillow splint).
  • Applies LE bivalves and other LE splints correctly following stretching (knee braces, L’Nard).
  • Applies LE splints/braces correctly for functional activities (FRC, AFO, caligaloc).
  • Applies cervical and trunk braces correctly based on coverage information (collar).
  • Applies UE bivalve splints correctly following stretching.
  • Performs skin checks appropriately prior to and following skin application and communicate adverse events to nursing/therapy.
  • May be required to aide and train clinical staff on splints and braces.
  • May be required to maintain cast and splint supply inventory.
  • Performs consistent with Shepherd Center standards, clinical policies, and procedures.
  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process.
  • Performs other duties as required/requested/assigned.
Required

Minimum Education
  • High school diploma required.
Required Minimum Certification
  • Orthotic Fitter certification.
  • BLS required.
Required Minimum Experience
  • One (1) year experience casting, splinting, and bracing.
Required Minimum Skills
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to closely follow detailed instructions.
  • Demonstrates competency in time management, organization, prioritization and critical thinking by planning and organizing work assignments and prioritizing the specific needs of the patient.
  • Takes responsibility for growing professionally and seek opportunities for improving skills.
