Training
Upon hire, Firefighter EMT Recruits must complete a full academy training program including National Registry Advanced EMT certification, NPQ Firefighter 1 & 2 certification, and NPQ Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations certification at the Atlanta Fire Rescue Training Academy. The academy lasts approximately one year. Completion within the designated time is required; failure to meet requirements results in dismissal. After graduation, recruits are assigned to a station as a firefighter on probationary status for 6 months.

General Job Description and Classification
The purpose of this position is to assist citizens of Atlanta with various emergency and non‑emergency needs, including emergency medical services, fire suppression, hazmat incidents, motor vehicle and roadway incidents, technical rescue, apparatus operations, public safety education, and overall community leadership.
Responsibilities
- Perform duties in accordance with City of Atlanta’s Fire and Rescue SOPs.
- Identify ancillary health hazards, precautions, and implement appropriate medical protocols.
- Evaluate scenes upon arrival, identify dangerous building conditions and electrical emergencies, and apply appropriate procedures.
- Implement emergency techniques when individuals are trapped or disoriented.
- Identify hazardous materials.
- Operate emergency vehicles safely and efficiently while responding to radio dispatch and/or telephone requests.
- Assess and manage incidents, determine number of individuals in need of assistance, set up medical area, and assess nature of injuries.
- Provide emergency medical care as Advanced EMT, including basic trauma life support and pediatric life support.
- Maintain protective clothing and self‑contained breathing apparatus.
- Assist in fire suppression activities including ventilation, forced entry, salvage, and overhaul; perform firefighting duties; assist in hazardous materials operations and technical rescue operations.
- Attend meetings, seminars, and training as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations.
- Use independent judgment and discretion in decision‑making during emergency situations.
- Respond to orders and requests as directed by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Good physical condition required.
- Ability to learn operation of tools and equipment.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations and procedures.
- Ability to learn and apply standard firefighting emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
- Ability to perform strenuous work under extreme conditions.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to assemble information and produce concise written reports.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret fire and emergency reports.
- Ability to complete intensive training program on firefighting, emergency medical services, and rescue work.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 17½ years old at the time of application.
- Legal United States citizen or possess valid current documentation to be legally employed in Georgia.
- High school diploma or GED and a valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Honorable or uncharacterized discharge from a military branch, if applicable.
Additional Requirements for Firefighter/EMT Recruit Candidates
- Successfully complete the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or present a valid CPAT certificate issued within 12 months.
- Pass the Accuplacer Test or provide proof of exemption (Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree or valid SAT, ACT, Accuplacer or ASSET scores within 5 years).
