The surgical technician works under the direct supervision of Surgeons, Physicians and Registered Nurses to assist in rendering professional care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This position is responsible for preparing operating rooms, maintaining sterile technique, assisting during procedures, and ensuring proper handling of surgical instruments and supplies.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies according to procedure-specific requirements.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout all surgical procedures.
- Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, sutures, and supplies.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and respond promptly during surgery.
- Perform surgical counts (sponges, needles, instruments) in collaboration with nursing staff.
- Prepare and position patients for surgery, ensuring comfort, safety, and proper anatomical alignment.
- Handle, clean, decontaminate, and sterilize surgical instruments per regulatory and manufacturer standards.
- Monitor sterile field integrity and immediately correct contamination risks.
- Assist with the cleaning of the operating room.
- Comply with OSHA, Joint Commission, CMS, and infection prevention standards.
- Participate at in-service staff meetings.
- Participate in quality improvement, safety initiatives, and continuing education activities.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program
- Two (2) years of related experience
- BLS Certification
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification or equivalent credential
- Spine and total joint experience.
- Ability to lift and position patients and equipment (up to 50 lbs)
- Prolonged standing, bending, and fine motor activity
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens and surgical chemicals in accordance with OSHA Standards.
