DescriptionJob Summary:
This role defines the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) who serves as a clinician in both inpatient and outpatient areas. The RCP employs evidence‑based practice, department and service area initiatives, and grows professionally. The RCP adheres to Emory Behavioral Standards, Service Culture Guidelines, and provides patient‑ and family‑centered care while consistently meeting departmental and hospital quality and safety goals.
- Completes and maintains all competencies; refers and guides others in policy and procedure use; assures competence in new areas; ensures equipment is functional and ready for emergencies.
- Assesses unit work, reports to supervisor/charge, anticipates needs; participates in patient round discussions; identifies alternative methods of therapy or mechanical ventilation; is competent in clinical areas as appropriate; performs other duties as assigned.
- Suggests modifications to care to the patient‑care team; acquires resources not readily available; serves as a ventilator‑management resource; attends department meetings (75%) and in‑services and educational offerings regularly.
- Partners in product evaluation and selection; reviews policies and procedures to guide practice; attends one professional local, state, or national respiratory conference every two years; completes 10 CEUs annually.
- Minimum education:
Associate’s degree in Respiratory Care. - Minimum experience:
New graduate to 2 years; may work independently under general direction. - Licensure:
Currently licensed as an active Respiratory Care Practitioner in Georgia; holds Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care. - Preferred membership in the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC).
- Other requirements: BLS required; ACLS required for adult critical care within 6 months of hire; NRP required for special‑care nursery/NICU.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20–50 lbs lifting 0–33% of the work day, 11–25 lbs 34–66%, 0–10 lbs 67–100%;
Lifting up to 50 lbs max;
Carrying objects up to 25 lbs;
Occasional to frequent standing & walking;
Occasional sitting;
Close‑eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing);

Exposures include blood‑borne pathogens, bio‑hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care/handling injuries, radiation, shift work, travel. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, is required.
