Position Purpose
The Manager, Government Relations will represent and advance The Home Depot's government relations agenda before elected officials and government decision-makers primarily at the state and local levels. This role will oversee government relations strategies for a defined portfolio of states (e.g., Northeast), representing The Home Depot's interests in markets with significant legislative and regulatory activity impacting retail operations.
The position is based in The Home Depot's Washington, DC office and will serve as the state team's representative in the office. The position may lead on one or more retail policy issues (e.g., data privacy, labor, housing, tax, organized retail crime) and serve as a go-to resource for the Government Relations team on assigned topics. Focus areas will evolve based on business needs and legislative priorities.
Key Responsibilities- 20% Develop and implement government relations strategies and legislative agenda for primary responsibility states. Those states will be determined based on the background and experience of the manager, government relations.
- 10% Responsible for following all election laws and to enforce compliance and reporting by team.
- 20% Responsible for building and maintaining relationships on behalf of The Home Depot with state elected and appointed officials such as governors, Lt. governors, attorneys general and legislative leaders as well as county and city officials such as county board members, mayors and city council members.
- 20% Manage state and local legislative and regulatory agenda including tracking legislation at the state and local level. Responsible for working with internal business partners to develop positions and communicating views and influencing state and local officials.
- 20% Manage outside consultants, state retail associations and partnerships with national public policy and legislative groups. Develop and manage budget for multi-state region that includes dues and subscriptions, travel, contributions and consulting/professional fees.
- 10% Develop and maintain relationships with Home Depot internal departments and executives to identify operational issues requiring legislative action.

- No direct responsibility for supervising others.
- Typically requires overnight travel 20% to 50% of the time.
- Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.
- Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
- Must be eighteen years of age or older.
- Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
- Must have experience working for a state legislature, governor's office, large city/county office or previous experience in government relations, public affairs, or lobbying at Fortune 500 company or trade association.
- Government experience or a proven track record handling government relations for a Fortune 200 company or trade association is desired.
- 5-7 years of experience working in corporate government relations or relevant experience.
- Strong writing skills and ability to create timely content for internal and external audiences
- Experience working with elected officials and their staffs
- Experience running grassroots coalitions and campaigns and managing outside consultants
- The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

- Must possess superior written and oral communications skills. Excellent presentation skills required. Exceptional judgment and ability to function and multi-task under pressure. Travel expected.
- Manager will be one of the company's primary spokespeople/interfaces with key state and local elected officials as well as organizations and community groups related to the company's top issues.
