Position: Supervisory Park Ranger (Protection)

Overview

This position is located in Interior Region 2, in the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection.

Duties
  • Serves as the Regional Chief Ranger for the Southeast Region.
  • Ensures that law enforcement operational activities are uniformly implemented in compliance with directives, policies, and law.
  • Investigate, apprehend, and detain individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws.
  • Provides expertise, support, review, and information as needed, to parks, WASO and solicitors on matters related to regulations in parks.
  • Manages the Region's all-hazards and incident management program to include the Eastern Incident Management Team.
  • Principal advisor to the Regional Director concerning visitor and resource protection and law enforcement in all park areas in the region.
  • Directs fiscal management for regional visitor and resource protection programs, including implementation of financial plans, operating program, and special accounts.
  • Participates in meetings and conferences with Regional Directorate, park superintendents, regional staff, union officials, and representatives of other Federal agencies regarding ranger service matters.
  • Coordinates with managers, including natural and cultural resources, maintenance, and interpretation to ensure needs are adequately met.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings and briefing sessions with managers, Regional Director, Directorate and other teams and office.
  • Directly responsible for the development and supervision ranging in grade from GS-7 to GS-13, including program managers.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • Must possess a Type I or higher Law Enforcement Commission.
  • New employees must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entry on duty.
  • Time-in-grade requirements apply; must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent; applies to current and former Federal employees under certain appointment types.
  • Selected individuals must be free of domestic violence convictions. Appointment subject to successful completion of background security investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Drug testing required prior to appointment and random testing may apply during employment.
  • Must be able to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle; valid driver s license required; must submit driving records as required.
  • Must wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards. Uniform allowance provided.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime; travel overnight up to several nights per month; a government charge card may be required for travel.
Additional Qualifications and Miscellaneous

Qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Federal experience credit and documentation requirements for hours worked, and special retirement coverage eligibility are described in the vacancy. Applicants may be required to complete training and maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. This position may require carrying a firearm and maintaining firearm proficiency. A medical examination and fitness tests may be required prior to appointment.

Normal and emergency working conditions may include field duties, remote locations, and exposure to natural elements. Telework is restricted to emergency or natural disaster situations.
