The Director of Finance plays a key role in advancing the mission of First Baptist Atlanta (FBA) by ensuring that financial operations are handled with excellence and spiritual integrity. This leader is responsible for stewarding the resources God has entrusted to the church, providing oversight in budgeting, reporting, compliance, and long-term planning. All financial work is approached as ministry, equipping the body of Christ to serve more effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a growing and mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ
- Must align with the beliefs, values, and mission of First Baptist Atlanta
- A current church member of FBA or enrolled in First Class and willing to become a member within the first three months of employment
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in nonprofit or ministry settings
- Proven success in budget oversight, audit preparation, and team leadership
- Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial practices
- Strong proficiency in financial systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and written communication abilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Embody the values of the Red-Carpet Standard and exemplify FBA’s 3M strategy
- Develop and implement financial strategies that align with the mission and long-term goals of FBA
- Provide financial analysis and forecasting to inform decision-making by senior leadership
- Advise the Executive Director of Operations and leadership teams on financial planning and risk management
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and reconciliations
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and reports
- Manage the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department leaders
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards
- Coordinate and manage the annual external audit processes
- Implement and monitor internal controls to protect financial integrity
- Supervise and develop finance department staff, promoting accountability and excellence
- Serve as a ministry consultant to staff, helping ministries effectively use data to shape strategy, improve engagement, and measure outcomes
- Ensure compliance with all privacy and data protection regulations and best practices
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Performs annual employee reviews for direct reports
- Provides training and development opportunities to strengthen the team’s financial, analytical, and professional skills
- Explores and implements best practices by connecting with other churches and ministries to enhance financial stewardship and accountability
- Model biblical stewardship through personal tithing
MINISTERIAL EXEMPTION
Every staff member at FBA is part of the ministry team, supporting the spiritual mission of the church. All employees are expected to actively model a Christ-centered life and support the church’s mission. This includes representing Christ in word and deed, praying with others when appropriate, encouraging biblical understanding, and contributing to the spiritual life of the church. The Director of Finance helps advance the gospel by stewarding the church’s resources with spiritual integrity and gospel purpose, “for it is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).
In all financial matters, great care is taken “to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man” (2 Corinthians 8:21).
