Our client, a premier wire and cable manufacturer, has engaged Vida Group Talent Solutions to help them recruit strong engineering talent for their organization.
The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and optimization of wire and cable products to meet customer specifications, industry standards, and manufacturing capabilities. This role collaborates cross-functionally with sales, production, quality, and procurement teams to deliver cost-effective, high-performance cable solutions for industrial, commercial, and specialty applications.
Key Responsibilities- Product Design & Development
- Design new wire and cable constructions based on customer requirements and applicable standards (UL, CSA, NEC, IEEE, ASTM, IEC, etc.)
- Develop conductor, insulation, shielding, jacketing, and armoring specifications
- Create detailed drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical documentation
- Evaluate materials for electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical performance
- Perform electrical calculations (ampacity, voltage drop, impedance, resistance, capacitance)
- Conduct thermal, mechanical, and environmental performance assessments
- Support failure analysis and root cause investigations
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards
- Manufacturing Support
- Collaborate with production to ensure manufacturability and process efficiency
- Support new product launches and production trials
- Optimize product designs for cost, performance, and manufacturability
- Assist in resolving production and quality issues
- Provide technical support to sales and customers
- Review and interpret customer specifications
- Prepare technical submittals and product data sheets
- Participate in customer meetings and technical discussions as needed
- Identify opportunities for material and cost savings
- Support lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives
- Stay current on industry trends, materials, and technologies
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
- Experience
- 7+ years of experience in wire and cable manufacturing or related industry preferred
- Experience with industrial, power, control, instrumentation, or specialty cables is a plus
- Technical Skills
- Knowledge of wire and cable construction and materials
- Familiarity with UL, CSA, NEC, IEEE, ASTM, or IEC standards
- Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Solid Works, or similar)
- Strong understanding of electrical theory and calculations
- Experience with ERP systems and BOM management preferred
- Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities
- Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with high-voltage, tray cable, flexible cable, or specialty cable design
- Knowledge of extrusion, stranding, shielding, and jacketing processes
