Senior or Principal Transmission Planning Engineer
Position SummaryOur client transmission planning department is looking for a transmission planning engineer. The candidate will be joining a team that leads a diversified and exciting portfolio of transmission planning work. This position is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who has experience working in the power industry. The successful candidate must be self‑motivated, results‑oriented and be able to work under the supervision of the Manager of Transmission Planning & Services to perform Transmission System and Transmission area studies, propose system improvement projects, balance multiple tasks and prioritize work, carry out various job functions and duties to serve our client's Participants.
The individual performs Transmission Planning studies including steady‑state power flow, transient/dynamic system analysis and power quality assessments. This individual provides technical expertise and analytical support for the transmission planning activities of the company by performing transmission planning studies and evaluating electrical alternatives to support transmission system reliability. The individual should continuously support regulatory compliance for transmission planning and related functions.
Our main focus includes large‑load interconnection studies for customers from various sectors including technology (e.g. data centers), EV charging, manufacturing, agriculture, business parks, warehouses and many more. Collaborates closely with both stakeholders and their customers as well as internal teams to develop interconnection solutions and capacity upgrades, and consolidated engineering and implementation plans. We are excited to explore creative solutions and advanced technologies, to best serve our client's participant cities and their customers in a reliable, economic and timely manner.
Moreover, the team develops long‑term transmission capacity plans and strategies in conjunction and collaboration with other ITS participants to meet customer needs in the high growth areas.
Together in the TP group we will be in the frontline designing the future of our transmission grid to support all the electricity load growth in the state of Georgia.
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, with significant coursework in power systems.
- 6-8 years of experience in transmission planning, operations, or related fields for the senior role.
- 10-15 years of experience in transmission planning, operations, or related fields.
Skills & Knowledge
- Expert‑level knowledge in transmission system planning, regulatory compliance, and advanced grid studies.
- Experience leading multi‑disciplinary teams in large‑scale planning projects.
- Strong communication and leadership skills to present to executives, regulators, and stakeholders.
- Deep understanding of market conditions, policy impacts, and grid modernization technologies.
- Working knowledge of programming languages (Python, C#, and Visual ) and data visualization tools is a big plus.
- Lead strategic long‑term transmission planning initiatives, including reliability, economic, and interconnection planning.
- Oversee multiple planning studies, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Act as a subject matter expert (SME) in planning‑related regulatory proceedings.
- Collaborate with utilities, ITS participants, ISO/RTOs, and government agencies on grid expansion and infrastructure planning.
- Provide mentorship and training to junior and mid‑level engineers.
- Evaluate existing transmission facilities. Initiate and develop improvement projects to accommodate load growth or improved reliability for the short term and long term.
