Position

McKenney’s Inc. is seeking Project Engineers to join our team in Atlanta, Georgia. This entry‑level role lasts 9–12 months and is designed to expose you to our processes, capabilities, and scope of work before moving into an assistant‑project‑manager, engineer, sales engineer, or another role.

Summary

As a Project Engineer, you will work in a team environment where you will participate and learn McKenney’s pre‑construction processes, design and virtual construction, fabrication workflows, field installation, mechanical systems, and start‑up and commissioning of those systems. Learning objectives in this role include, but are not limited to, detailing mechanical systems (ductwork, mechanical piping, plumbing), coordinating work with customers and other trades through the BIM process, estimating projects, interacting with suppliers, vendors, subcontractors, and working in the field as part of an installation crew.

We expect you to develop good relationships through regular interactions with project managers, field and shop foremen, virtual construction team members, field operations, engineers, suppliers, and other trade subcontractors.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or building construction; will accept an equivalent business‑management degree with a focus in construction or engineering.
  • If no 4‑year degree is attained, a high‑school diploma with a minimum 5+ years of internal experience working with plumbing, piping, or HVAC systems in office or field is required.
  • Must have PC experience in Windows environments, working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, e‑mail, web‑enabled applications, and database software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in the construction industry.
  • Two years of experience managing mechanical work.
  • Strong business acumen (entrepreneurship counts).
  • Knowledge of account management (managing multiple customers).
  • Leadership exposure (conferences, training, etc.).

  • Ability to use time productively, maximize efficiency, and meet challenging work goals.
  • Must be a self‑starter with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize drafting needs to maximize profitability.
  • Team‑oriented and able to respond quickly to changing customer demands.
  • Effective communication across a diverse group of people (PMs, drafting, field staff, fabrication shops, etc.).
  • Solid reasoning, math, science, and technical skills.
  • Ability to take on additional responsibilities as needed and manage priorities with minimal guidance.
  • Exceptional work ethic and high level of project ownership, uphold company values, demand highest standard of conduct from self and others.
  • Persistence and ability to attain results under adverse circumstances and conflict.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
  • Moderate exposure to elements like hot/cold temperatures, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves exposure to construction‑related hazards or physical risks, requiring basic safety precautions.
  • Light physical effort; requires handling average‑weight objects up to 25 pounds and some standing or walking.
