The Role
The Director of Transmission Engineering leads the strategic direction, technical excellence, and operational performance of the Transmission Engineering group. This individual is responsible for overseeing the design and delivery of high-voltage transmission projects, including generation tie-lines (wind, solar, battery storage) and standalone transmission systems. The Director will guide a team of engineering professionals to ensure that all project deliverables meet or exceed quality standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations, from early development through construction and commissioning.
This role also plays a key leadership function in driving innovation, operational efficiencies, and growth initiatives within the business.
- Develop, coordinate, and oversee transmission engineering related design activities as required to effectively serve our clients.
- Responsible for day‑to‑day work assignments on a project‑specific basis, reviewing engineers’ drawings, and solving design issues as required.
- Functions as department manager and provides organizational structure with roles and responsibilities to develop engineering standards.
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all transmission engineering activities, ensuring the delivery of safe, reliable, cost‑effective, and high‑quality solutions.
- Manage department resources, budgets, and schedules across a portfolio of projects.
- Lead the development and implementation of engineering standards, processes, and quality assurance protocols.
- Collaborate closely with Substation, Protection & Control, Civil/Structural, and Project Management teams to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Actively support business development initiatives by engaging in client meetings, proposal development, and strategic planning.
- Mentor and grow a high‑performing team of engineers and technical staff through training, feedback, and professional development.
- Establish and maintain relationships with clients, vendors, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders.
- Oversee risk management, compliance, and technical due diligence for major projects.
- Contribute to strategic planning, revenue forecasting, and operational growth of the engineering organization.
- Represent UUE in industry conferences, technical committees, and professional associations.
- Travel up to 20% across North America as needed for project support and client engagement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering is required.
- Master’s degree in Engineering or Business (preferred).
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license and NCEES Record are required.
- 12+ years of progressive experience in transmission line engineering, with 5+ of those years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
- Proven experience in leading multi‑disciplinary teams through all project phases including feasibility, permitting, detailed design, and construction support.
- Strong experience in high‑voltage design (69 kV to 500 kV), transmission routing, and permitting processes.
- Deep knowledge of transmission line engineering, NESC, NEC, IEEE, ASCE, and regional utility standards.
