Position SummaryFor this department chair position, we seek individuals who are committed to the College and Division’s missions to increase and broaden the intellectual competency of students and help develop future leaders who are innovators and problem solvers capable of effectively addressing global problems that affect modern society. Applicants are encouraged to highlight their demonstrated commitment to supporting the academic and personal success of Black men and men of color, particularly those from culturally and socio-economically diverse backgrounds.
Candidates should describe how their teaching, mentoring, and leadership experiences have contributed to student achievement and inclusive excellence. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the College’s general education curriculum and uphold the institution’s commitment to a well-rounded liberal arts education that prepares students for leadership and service.
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in engineering, at least seven years teaching experience, and at least seven years of research or industry experience. Teaching at the undergraduate level and experience in online teaching is desired.
Preferred QualificationsFor this Department Chair position, candidates with prior experience as a Department Chair are highly preferred. We seek applicants with a proven history of leadership at the Departmental level.
Preferred Education/Experience Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThe following are examples of courses that qualified candidates should be comfortable teaching:
Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Optics & Modern Physics, Engineering Graphics, Engineering Statics, Mechanics of Materials, and Engineering Dynamics. In addition, candidates must actively engage in research, demonstrate the ability to establish a rigorous research program, secure program funding, and regularly provide students with academic advisement. Specific areas of research focus are open. However, individuals with a background in Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering are highly preferred.
The qualified applicant’s research should complement and strengthen existing research areas, which include: (1) Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics; (2) Materials Science Physics; and (3) Nuclear Physics.
Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate leadership, promote a commitment to teaching excellence, and possess prior research experience. Successful candidates will be expected to teach a 3/3 course load consisting of various courses within our introductory physics curriculum and pre-engineering courses. However, a reduced course load is granted for the hired Department Chair. In addition, candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to build and sustain a successful research program and grantsmanship.
