Discipline Of Critical Care At UNSWWe are a composite discipline comprised of Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care and Anaesthesia. Our patients present with symptoms and signs rather than a diagnosis. We see the whole spectrum of acuity. We assess patients with evolving conditions that are eventually diagnosed, either while under our care or later, as an inpatient. The pathology we see fall within all the other medical and surgical specialties.
We work in an environment of uncertainty, where our primary tasks are the identification of life- or organ-threatening conditions and the stabilisation of underlying pathophysiology in order to determine the cause or diagnosis. We collaborate closely with colleagues across all medical and surgical specialties; in other words, we are part of everyone else’s business. As such, we consult, collaborate, and function within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Our focus is the management of unstable and undifferentiated patients using a structured approach.
To establish this discipline, we have brought together academics and conjoint lecturers from the three specialties to provide teaching at all the campuses.
The Current Focus Of The Discipline Is To- Develop an innovative curriculum and assessment for Critical Care with the Medicine Redesign Program.
- Provide teaching and assessment resources for use across the campuses to achieve standardised teaching and transparent learning outcomes.
UNSW’s Education Focussed roles (EF) enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality education and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this prestigious role will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities.
