. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster.
The ESOL Instructor is responsible for providing integrated English language instruction for non-native English speakers. The instructor must develop and tailor curriculum and materials to the needs of students enrolled in the program, supporting student recruitment, registration, attendance tracking, retention, progress, and assessment. This is a part-time non-exempt 18.75 hours per week position, reporting to the Adult Education Instructional Supervisor. Classes meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings;
Mondays are orientation and registration days for new students and run throughout the year.
- Deliver integrated ESOL instruction:
- Plan and prepare curricula and lesson plans for mixed-level classes.
- Adapt lesson activities across proficiency levels.
- Utilize and oversee community volunteers as classroom assistants.
- Document student progress with goal setting and conference notes.
- Orient and conference with current and potential students, assisting with intake and enrollment.
- Administer English language assessments.
- Assist with record-keeping and data entry to support program administration and compliance.
- Maintain a positive learning environment and facilitate cultural and community learning activities.
- Maintain open and effective communication with adult education team members, reporting on program goals, attendance, progress, and issues.
- Actively participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Bachelor’s degree (4-year) required.
- Completion of a certificate program in Adult Education, TEFL, TESL, and/or TESOL is preferred.
- Relevant professional experience in education and/or human services strongly preferred.
- Experience working with immigrants or refugees preferred.
- Strong desire to support vulnerable individuals and families.
- Enthusiasm for adult education and language learning.
- Interest in immigrant, refugee, and asylee issues and the resettlement process.
- Strong communication abilities.
- Detail-oriented and comfortable with online databases.
- Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment, in person, online, and over the phone.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, and collaborate.
- Strong time management skills and comfort with computer and web-based platforms.
- Fluent in spoken and written English; bilingual abilities desired.
- Standard office work with in-person delivery of orientations, meetings, and online for class sessions.
Pay Range: $20.20 - $22.50 per hour for U.S.
