Overview

The General Superintendent is the senior field operations leader responsible for the overall execution, safety, quality, and consistency of construction operations across projects within the Atlanta market. This role provides leadership, oversight, and mentorship to Superintendents and Senior Superintendents, ensuring H. J. Russell’s standards for safety, quality, schedule performance, and client satisfaction are consistently achieved. The General Superintendent directs field operations from preconstruction through closeout, ensuring coordinated execution and consistent standards across all projects.

This role partners cross-functionally to align field performance with project objectives, company standards, and risk management practices. This role promotes field excellence by aligning field operations with company standards, operational goals, and risk management practices while developing the next generation of field leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leads field operations across multiple projects to ensure safe, high-quality, and on-schedule execution.
  • Provides expert leadership in construction means and methods, constructability, sequencing, logistics planning, and site constraints to support coordinated project delivery.
  • Oversees and holds Superintendents and Senior Superintendents accountable for execution planning, look-ahead scheduling, and critical path management.
  • Champions and enforces Russell’s safety culture, ensuring proactive hazard identification, compliance with regulatory requirements, and sustained corrective actions.
  • Establishes and reinforces workmanship standards across all projects to prevent rework and ensure compliance with contract documents, approved submittals, and company quality expectations.
  • Partners with Project Management to mitigate schedule and productivity risks while protecting safety, quality, and commercial outcomes.
  • Aligns subcontractors and trade partners with project sequencing and site logistics to maintain workflow continuity and field productivity.
  • Resolves field-level conflicts and coordination challenges to minimize disruption and maintain execution momentum.
  • Develops and mentors field leadership talent, setting clear performance expectations and supporting succession development within the market.
  • Promotes consistent communication standards across field teams and serves as a senior field representative with clients, inspectors, and project stakeholders as needed.
  • Identifies operational improvement opportunities and implements standardized field practices across projects to strengthen overall field performance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 20+ years of progressive construction experience, including leadership of field operations on commercial construction projects.
  • Experience overseeing field operations across multiple projects and providing technical guidance to Superintendents.
  • Proven ability to diagnose systemic execution risks and implement standardized solutions at the market level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in construction means and methods with the ability to evaluate, standardize, and elevate field execution practices across multiple projects.
  • Experience in large-scale, public-sector, or joint venture construction environments.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and hold field teams accountable for performance outcomes.
  • Experience managing schedule performance and understanding critical path impacts.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities in fast-paced field environments.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to influence Superintendents, Project Management teams, trade partners, and clients.
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Working knowledge of construction scheduling and field technology tools (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project, Procore, CMiC).
