Overview
The City of College Park Department of Recreation and Cultural Arts is accepting applications for the seasonal position of Summer Day Camp Counselor for the Hugh
C. Conley, Tracey Wyatt, and Wayman & Bessie Brady Recreation Centers. The role provides a safe, fun, and memorable camp experience for children aged 6 to 12. A successful candidate will supervise, teach, and instruct youth in various games, arts, and leisure skills in a camp environment, creating a positive, supportive, creative, and safe learning environment during day camp programs. Hours per week: availability between 6:30 am and 6:00 pm (actual shift will vary);
40 hours/week. The position involves active, hands-on operation of the camp, interacting regularly with participants, parents, and staff to provide a high-quality experience. Activity areas include indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, arts and crafts, on- and off-site enrichment programs, field trips, and group breakfast, lunches, and snack time.
This is not a desk job and requires independent judgment to identify and apply appropriate guidelines and procedures, lead a specific group of children through the daily camp schedule, and work with team members to meet the needs of all campers.
Responsibilities- Leads and instructs games, crafts, and activities appropriate to camp and as directed by the Camp Manager; maintains an inventory of camp supplies.
- Performs routine maintenance during break including checking restrooms, picking up trash, straightening chairs and tables, and other duties as required.
- Communicates with Camp Managers about program needs; makes recommendations for replacement items.
- Assists in age-appropriate lessons, activities, games, and crafts for children aged 6-12.
- Assists Camp Director in coordinating the setup and cleanup of camp and the cleanliness of camp areas.
- Adheres to camp policies and procedures and ensures staff and camper compliance.
- Acts as a positive role model for campers; administers camper disciplinary procedures when warranted.
- Assists with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs.
- Reports all necessary disciplinary actions to the Camp Manager as necessary.
- Under the supervision of the Camp Manager, prepares accident/incident reports as needed and follows established procedures for reporting accidents/incidents; handles medical, safety, and severe weather emergencies per the camp staff manual and in-service training; completes needed reports and submits them to the Camp Manager.
- Participates in in-service training as required.
- Maintains positive relationships with parents, campers, and staff.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.
- Regular and consistent attendance is required.
- Must be able to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 18th to July 24th. (Additional days before may be necessary for training.)
- Must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training scheduled on Tuesday, May 26th, from 9 AM to 2 PM.
- Applicant must feel comfortable working around/in water.
- Knowledge of camp principles, child-development techniques, and methods of maintaining and using recreation equipment.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Must be able to use tact and courtesy in dealing with the public.
- Must be able to analyze and evaluate procedures and work processes and exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal effectively and courteously with others, to work independently and in team settings.
- Must be able to type or use a personal computer with word processing and related software, and to enter and retrieve information with reasonable speed and accuracy.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds, standing, sitting, and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
