JOB DESCRIPTION

The Specialized Tax Services (STS) Accounting Methods group helps companies optimize their federal tax accounting methods, including revenue and expense recognition, capitalization, depreciation, and amortization, and other special methods of accounting. STS Accounting Methods is part of BDO’s Specialized Tax Services business, which is composed of various tax consulting practices designed to help companies comply with specific areas of federal, state, and international tax law.

Job Summary

As an STS Tax Manager, Accounting Methods, you will help achieve BDO’s core purpose—Helping People Thrive Every Day—by helping both public and private companies identify federal tax benefits and correct federal tax exposures. Our clients are leaders in industries such as technology, manufacturing, healthcare, architecture/engineering services, and consumer products. You will collaborate with BDOers in all business lines and with client leaders in tax, accounting, finance, operations, software, manufacturing, and supply chain departments.

This role provides opportunities to develop technical, interpersonal, communication, project management, practice management, and business development skills.

Job Duties
  • Research
    • Identify situations where research is necessary and conduct appropriate investigation.
    • Confirm accuracy of facts and sources.
    • Prepare studies of tax implications and outline alternative courses of action for clients.
    • Compose effective research memos and marketing presentations.
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure client compliance with applicable authorities.
    • Identify options to minimize client tax and reporting burdens.
    • Recognize and communicate “gray areas” and related risks to partners.
    • Complete accurate work papers and tax return forms.
    • Meet firm risk management and tax quality control standards.
    • Communicate with clients and Core Tax Services, Assurance, and Consulting personnel about issues.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develop, recommend, and implement solutions to maximize client tax benefits.
    • Stay informed of new legal and factual developments and communicate effective approaches to partners.
    • Assist in maximizing all potential tax accounting methods benefits.
    • Identify process improvements.
  • Tax Controversy
    • Represent clients before tax authorities.
    • Respond to inquiries from federal and state tax authorities.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develop an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in tax accounting methods.
    • Identify client opportunities and issues related to tax specializations beyond accounting methods.
  • Strategy Development
    • Develop new or improved ideas and strategies for clients, the firm, or firm personnel.
    • Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review day‑to‑day work of Senior Associates, Associates, and interns on engagements.
  • Ensure trainees are well‑trained in all required areas.
  • Evaluate performance and assist in goal setting to enhance professional development.
  • Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete constructive evaluations.
  • Act as a career advisor to Senior Associates and Associates.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, tax, or finance (required), with a preferred focus in accounting or tax.
  • Master’s degree (preferred).
Qualifications, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Three‑five years (plus) of federal tax client service experience.
  • Prior supervising experience with tax consulting professionals.
  • Experience with accounting methods (preferred).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and research abilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Capability to multi‑task and work independently or in a group.
  • Proven ability to manage a team and delegate work.
  • Strong relationship building with firm and client personnel.
  • Positive team environment leadership and professional development contribution.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on engagements.
Experience
  • Five or more years of prior federal tax client service experience (required).
  • Prior experience supervising tax consulting professionals (required).
  • Prior experience with accounting methods (preferred).
