Freeman Mathis and Gary, LLP is a rapidly growing, national specialty litigation firm seeking an experienced Property Accountant to join our Atlanta office. The Property Accountant is responsible for managing all accounting and financial reporting related to the firm’s real estate holdings, leased office locations, and property-related transactions. This role ensures accuracy in property financials, supports lease administration, oversees expense allocations, and partners closely with the Real Estate team.

The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, deep understanding of GAAP, and experience with property or lease accounting—preferably within a professional services or law firm environment.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Maintain and reconcile all general ledger accounts related to real estate, including rent, CAM (Common Area Maintenance), taxes, and utilities.
  • Record monthly rent payments.
  • Manage accounting for tenant improvements, capital expenditures, and property-related assets/liabilities.
  • Reconcile security deposits, landlord statements, and lease escalations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual property-related financial statements and variance analyses.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting for real estate costs across all office locations.
  • Produce ad hoc financial analyses to support real estate strategy, relocations, expansions, or lease renegotiations.
  • Review leases and amendments to ensure proper accounting treatment.
  • Maintain accurate schedules and documentation for all lease obligations.
  • Partner with Real Estate team to track occupancy changes and office space allocations.
  • Allocate real estate costs to departments, practice groups, or cost centers as required.
  • Review and validate landlord CAM reconciliations and escalate discrepancies.
  • Work with Accounts Payable to ensure timely processing of property-related invoices.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing documentation related to leases and property assets.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and firm policies.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of internal controls over property accounting.

Education, Experience, and

Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 3–5 years of relevant property accounting or lease accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and ASC 842 lease accounting standards.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., Aderant, or similar) and Excel.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical thinking.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive financial information.
  • Experience working in a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Familiarity with multi-office, multi-state lease portfolios.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
