Schedule:
Monday‑Friday 8:30 am‑5:00 pm with rare evening and weekend responsibilities. Ferry departs at 8:30 am with no later option. If you miss the ferry, you will not be able to work that day. UGAMI pays the ferry fee.
Location:
Sapelo Island, Georgia (not Athens, Georgia). Ferry travel required daily.

Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- General construction experience preferred.
This position will perform skilled trades work on the buildings and facilities at the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island. Duties include general construction and maintenance for a large research and education facility. Responsibilities may include building frameworks, installing cabinets, siding, drywall, insulation, building tables and shelves, repairing broken water lines, HVAC repairs, electrical assistance, and operating heavy equipment. After training, the position will be responsible for purchases using UGAMart.
Knowledge,Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
- Extensive knowledge of general construction practices and facilities maintenance.
- Computer skills including email, word processing, and general internet familiarity.
- Competent at maintaining and repairing large research and housing facilities, including marine vessels.
- Good people skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Work in a hot, humid climate; tolerant of biting insects; lift up to 75 pounds.
Duties & Responsibilities- Facilities Maintenance and Repair (85 %) – Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, perform general maintenance and repair services for all facilities. Maintain working knowledge of various trades (carpentry, plumbing, painting, welding, mechanics, etc.). Operate hand tools, power tools, and large equipment. Use UGAMart for purchases. May occasionally overseer unskilled or semi‑skilled workers.
- Vessel Maintenance and Repair (10 %) – Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, perform maintenance and repairs for small boats and trawling vessels. Tasks include removing biological growth, painting, and motor repair.
- Additional Duties (5 %) – All UGAMI employees may take on additional duties such as preparing meals for visitors or classes, cleaning, landscaping, or supporting island‑wide events. Some weekend and night work as needed.
