Position SummaryThis position will provide research support to research and extension programs under the supervision of FRS superintendent, Andy Carter. The assistant will participate in all aspects of field work including tillage, fertilization, planting, irrigation, cultivation, harvest and application of crop protection chemicals. They will be responsible for maintenance and repair of large equipment used to support the row crop research projects;
additionally, they will assist with forestry management practices and farm maintenance on all of the Tifton Campus Farms. They will maintain and submit field records and assist all FRS personnel with other projects as assigned.
- Minimum:
Requires at least a high school diploma or equivalent. - Preferred:
Associate’s Degree, good written and verbal skills, positive attitude, excellent work ethic.
- Knowledge and experience operating agricultural & heavy equipment including:
- Tractors
- Sprayers
- Combines
- Cotton Pickers
- Bulldozers
- Lift 50 lbs.
- Work outdoors in high heat and humidity
- Repeatedly bend, squat, climb, etc.
- Driving as necessary to perform job duties
- Research & Farm Equipment Maintenance (70%)
- Prepare research land
- Fertilize appropriately
- Plant crops
- Maintain crops
- Irrigate crops
- Harvest at appropriate times with implementation of forest management practices.
- Ensure that experimental protocols are followed in a timely fashion
- Ensure that standard agronomic convention is followed for each crop
- Ensure that preparation occurs to not delay implementation of research projects.
- Carefully measure experimental applications and correctly apply to research plots or fields
- Document each application with the following: date, time, product, amount delivered, rate delivered, ground speed, any conditions that may affect research
- Maintain farm equipment in good repair for use in research programs
- Notify the supervisor of potential problems and need for repairs
- Have equipment repaired and ready for use when required for the project
- Safely transport equipment between research locations.
- Avoid practices that increase the risk of injury or property damage when transporting equipment
- Ensure that safety straps are in good condition or replace
- Administrative (25%)
- Maintain detailed records and reports for research station superintendent and farm manager in an acceptable time period
- Provide records when requested during the year and provide completed forms at end of the year for use in research reports and manuscripts
- Maintain commercial fumigant, pesticide applicator’s license and industry required trainings to comply with all regulations.
- Take refresher courses and continuing education credits as required to maintain state licensure
