Responsibilities
  • Field – Lead onion pre-breeding and breeding research to generate segregating populations and identify promising center rot resistance lines adapted to short-day environments. (50%)
  • Greenhouse – Lead disease screening against center rot; assist internal collaborators with genome-edited mutant screening against center rot. (10%)
  • Laboratory – Assist in post-harvest bulb quality analysis, lead marker-assisted selection, and genomic selection activities related to QTL mapping. (15%)
  • Prepare peer-reviewed publications, participate in grant proposal preparation, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and seasonal workers in lab, greenhouse, and field setup. (15%)
  • Assigned tasks in other related vegetable breeding projects. (10%)
Position Summary
  • Lead onion breeding and pre-breeding research in a start-up setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of onion breeding methods, designing breeding blocks, and setting up pre-breeding experiments.
  • Handle and operate molecular biology and high-throughput phenotyping equipment and tools.
  • Understand statistical and biometrics principles for breeding research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in collaborative research and working in a multicultural team.
Education & Experience
  • PhD in Plant Breeding or equivalent topic.
  • Prior experience in onion breeding is needed; preferred experience in disease resistance screening, genomic selection, and wet lab research.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies
  • Proficiency in scripting using Python or R.
  • Prior experience setting up cages for onion breeding crosses, ensuring timely crosses, collecting phenotypic data, and analyzing breeding data.
