Lab Tech III NMI – New Materials Institute

Department: Vet Med‑SAMS‑New Materials Inst

Employment Type: Employee (Full Time)

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm

Location: Athens Area

Position Summary

Seeking a laboratory technician to join the Biological Materials, Analytical and Biosynthesis Team. The role provides technical support in microbial strain development, fermentation, and analytical services (respirometry, sample disintegration analysis, polymer analytical methods). The technician will run protocols, collect data, analyze samples, calibrate equipment, and coordinate ordering and maintenance of lab supplies. The position contributes to team research and addresses technical challenges with global impact.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in microbial strain development, microbial fermentation, and execution of laboratory experiments (60%).
  • Perform quality control management, data collection, sample analysis, equipment calibration, and analytical services (e.g., respirometry, sample disintegration analysis, polymer analytical properties). (60%)
  • Assist in ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies; maintain lab equipment, autoclaving, dishwashing, cleaning (20%).
  • Ship and receive samples, process samples, analyze data, and generate reports from experiments (20%).
Qualifications
  • Minimum:
    Technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or a professional certificate.
  • Preferred:
    Experience in microbiology, microbial genetics, fermentation, and basic analytical chemistry.
Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Drive to pick up analytical or microbial samples and supplies.
  • Sit for long periods; perform repetitive hand movements (pipetting, sample mixing, loading reactors, typing).
Other Requirements
  • Driving is a responsibility of this position.
  • Position of trust, requires security access.
